As a fellowship-trained and board-certified expert in plastic and cosmetic surgery, medicine is a passion and calling for Dr. Birchenough. He left a successful career as an aerospace engineer and consultant in Washington, DC to pursue an extensive medical education and to train in cosmetic surgery. His extensive experience in the newest surgical technologies gives him a heightened awareness and greater technical efficiencies with regard to understanding each patient’s unique needs and help guide outcomes for that person. This refined focus enables him to create the most natural and beautiful results for breasts, bodies, skin, face and hands.
Dr. Birchenough graduated from MIT in aerospace engineering and returned to school to earn his medical degree at the University of Virginia. Through a highly competitive process, he was then chosen to do a 6-year residency specialty training program in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. After graduating with two awards from the University of Virginia Department of Plastic Surgery he opted to continue refining his surgical skills.
He was selected to do an elective, highly specialized fellowship in Nashville, Tennessee with renowned plastic surgeons, Dr. Patrick Maxwell, Dr. Melinda Haws and Dr. Mary Gingrass. This allowed specific refinements in his techniques in breast implant cosmetic surgery (including the gummy-bear, anatomic implants), breast lifts, liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction, abdominoplasty, facelift, advanced breast reconstruction methods, and other cosmetic procedures. After the fellowship, Dr. Birchenough and his wife Dr. Katherine Birchenough, returned to her home state of South Carolina and settled in the beautiful Greenville, Spartanburg area.
Exemplary surgical skills, a penchant for a sincere doctor-patient connection and a holistic approach to each patient’s health and beauty goals enables Dr. Birchenough to deliver WOW results for his clients and patients.
